Conference & Convention Information

In Leeton Shire we have a range of venue locations and can manage groups up to 600 persons. We have the ability to cater for large groups and the capacity to provide comfortable accommodation for those people

Council has an experienced Events Coordinator and a team of capable staff at the Visitors Information Centre who can assist your Conference by way of administrative and logistic support. This reduces your area of responsibility purely to the conference program itself.

Introduction to Leeton

Leeton Shire is located in the centre of the Riverina region of southwest NSW and has a population of 12,000 within an area of 1,132 square kilometres. It is a 580 kilometres drive south west of Sydney or less than an hour and a half by air.

Leeton possesses a strong history in the production of citrus, wine grapes and is a major centre for the production of rice. It is a focal point for research, training and education in agricultural enterprise.

Leeton was the first of the irrigation towns and was designed by the renowned American architect Walter Burley Griffin, who went on to design Griffith and shaped the national capital Canberra. This is reflected in the circular design of Leeton’s streetscape. Leeton’s main commercial centre, along Pine and Kurrajong avenues, boasts some of the best preserved Art Deco architecture in Australia, reflecting the era of the town’s establishment.

The many Art Deco features give character to the town with 35 buildings listed on the Australian Institute of Architects’ Register of Significant 20th Century Buildings, including the landmark Roxy Theatre which has been screening movies since 1930.

The Leeton district is criss-crossed by myriad irrigation channels emanating from the Murrumbidgee River, the lifeblood of the area.

The river is more than that though and provides a veritable paradise for water sport and other recreational activities, as well as a backdrop for peaceful contemplation and relaxation.

Our Community’s Proven Event Management Capacity

Leeton is a relatively small but extremely resilient community consisting of many innovators, hard working volunteers, entrepreneurs and dedicated people.

Together, these people create a wonderful business, tourism and social community environment. Time and again, our close knit community comes together to work effectively on community-related events to ensure all proposed outcomes are achieved with exceptional results. The town itself is within 15 minutes drive to the local airport with another located at Griffith which is 40 minutes drive away.

The recently held 42nd annual Inner Wheel National Conference is a prime example of individuals in our community working collaboratively with local businesses, Council and community service groups to achieve a long-term goal.

The consultation process for this event began in early 2008 with preliminary topics selected, information packs distributed to potential delegates and itineries developed by Council’s tourism & events staff for visits to regional attractions for delegates and their spouses.

Some of the visitor attractions enjoyed by delegates include:

·        Visits to Lillypilly and Toorak Wineries

·        Visit to McCaughey Mansion

·        Whitton Museum

·        Fivebough & Tuckerbil Wetlands

·        Walking tours of Leeton’s Art Deco architecture

·        Narrandera Fisheries Centre

·        Junee Licorice Factory

·        Temora Aviation Museum

·        Altina Wildlife Park and;

·        Various local primary producers in the Riverina

The successful five-day conference was held in October 2010 with over 420 delegates attending from Australia and New Zealand.

Testimonial Statement: “The Inner Wheel Club of Leeton is still receiving accolades regarding the conference noting the friendliness of the people, the freshness of the food prepared at all the conference dinners and in the restaurants plus the taste of the local wines. We would encourage all organisations and associations to consider holding a conference in Leeton Shire as the area has a variety of activities/foods/wines etc to offer plus the people  are very friendly and knowledgeable regarding their town. The business houses of Leeton are also very supportive to all visitors.” Mrs Lenore Ditton – IWA 2010 National Conference Coordinator
